Mini denim skirt mode activated!

Why hack the Silvana skirt?
The Silvana skirt is a design characterized by:
-
a slightly flared cut
-
a mid-rise waist accentuated by back darts
-
elaborate front pleats
-
side pockets
-
a front slit
-
an invisible back zipper
Originally, its timeless midi length makes it chic and easy to wear. It is an alternative to pleated trousers, readily adopting the codes of masculine tailoring only to subvert them.
But in a short version? It's ultra-modern, a little mischievous, and perfect for the warmer season.

The hack: going from midi to mini
Transforming the Silvana skirt into a mini skirt is simple and accessible for intermediate sewers.
1. Choose the right length
-
Mini: mid-thigh (look presented here)
-
Classic short: above the knee (easy to wear)
Tip: Measure the distance from your waistline directly on yourself to determine the final length you desire.
2. Modify the pattern
On the FRONT and BACK pieces:
-
I drew a line 7 cm below the "shorten/lengthen" line indicated on the pattern, on both the front and back pieces. I am 1m63 tall, I cut the skirt in size 34, and I thus obtain a finished skirt (hem included in my measurement) that reaches mid-thigh.
This measurement is indicative, and you can of course adapt the length of the skirt as you wish and according to your height. -
we remove the front slit. The Silvana skirt originally features a signature front slit. In this mini skirt version, we are removing the slit to achieve a line suitable for a shorter length. We will therefore transform the front piece so that it is no longer cut x2 but x1 on the fold.
To do this:
-
Fold back the small notch that indicates the start of the slit, and continue along the entire front center, to remove the 1 cm of seam allowance included in the pattern.
-
Pin the front center of the front piece to the fabric fold, not x2.
3. Keep the signature details
To preserve the model's DNA, we do not alter:
-
the front pleats
-
the Italian pockets
-
the waistband with belt loops
These elements give the skirt its structured character.

What fabric for a short Silvana skirt?
Fabric quantity
For my mini skirt, I removed 30 cm of fabric compared to the recommended quantity in the pattern's supplies. The length of my skirt (including the waistband) is 39 cm.
For a result similar to the presented version, you will need:
-
34-38: 80 cm
-
40-44: 110 cm
-
46-52: 130 cm
However, this value will depend on your grading size and the desired final length. To obtain an accurate yardage, you will need to modify the pattern and then place your pieces according to the cutting plan in the brochure and measure the resulting length.
Fabric choice
For an optimal result, opt for medium-weight fabrics with some body. My version is sewn in our new 100% cotton gabardine printed Ghost Flower Red. And I had fun creating a total look with:
-
the Misfit perfecto sewn in matching fabric
-
the Almost blouse sewn in Ghost Flower viscose poplin of the same color
I really went for the "mini" printed denim look. But you can also choose a denim fabric, a medium-weight jacquard like our new Deep Roses jacquard, our tencel-linen-cotton dupion which has a beautiful drape, linen with some body, a very supple tailor-type wool fabric.
