About the Scala shirt pattern
What fabrics should I use?
We recommend soft, lightweight fabrics between 70 and 200 g/m² that can be easily pressed to form pleats. Ideal choices include poplin, crepe, voile, lace, fine denim (like our Macadam), or chambray - in cotton, viscose, linen, tencel, or silk. We've sewn the Scala shirt in a variety of fabrics, including Lunarès printed viscose poplin, Rouge Tango tencel satin, and Horizon viscose voile. Other great options available on our website include our ecru tencel, silk dupion, and cotton voiles.
How does the pattern fit?
The pattern fits true to size. The cut is straight with a certain ease. Do not oversize (sizes shown in the images of Emilie are in a size 36).
The pattern is available in sizes 34 to 52, including seam allowances.

Can I adapt the pattern to my body shape?
Yes, thanks to the free downloadable guide . The pattern has more shorten/lengthen lines for height adjustments.
Can I modify the pattern?
The Scala pattern features a fairly intricate construction. While modifications are possible, they require a basic understanding of patternmaking.
Please note that we do not offer individual support beyond the detailed step-by-step instructions in the booklet and the video sewing tutorial provided with the pattern.
Can I lengthen Scala into a shirt dress?
Yes. We have already made this type of transformation on other Maison Fauve patterns. See examples here .
Why aren’t there more women of different body shapes in the visuals?
We’re planning to feature the Scala pattern in our Autumn/Winter collection photoshoot, where we regularly present our designs on models with a variety of body types.
These new images will be available from mid-September and will be added directly to the Scala pattern product page on our website.
Is heat sealing essential?
Yes, it’s necessary to achieve the look and finish shown in our product photos

Care Instructions:
-
Overlock or finish the edges of your fabric coupon before machine washing.
-
Wash on a delicate cycle with a gentle spin, using detergent suitable for delicate fabrics.
-
Always place the fabric or finished garment in a laundry net during washing.
-
Do not tumble dry.
-
Lay flat to dry immediately after washing.
-
For delicate fabrics, we recommend testing a small sample first to ensure your machine settings are suitable.
-
-
Overcasting : recommended (or trim the seam allowances)
-
Joins: For each join, allow for a 10 cm pattern match.
Add 20 cm of extra fabric to account for joining. -
Is it itchy?: The fabric is made of 48% cotton, 40% pure wool, and 12% polyamide. It has a soft (though not ultra-soft) weave. We didn’t line the shorts, and they still feel comfortable against the skin.
-
How to line my garment sewn in this fabric : for all our garments with a lining, we guide you step by step through the sewing steps. If the pattern does not include a lining, you will have to create the pattern yourself.
-
Recommended patterns : Dandelion, Metropolis, Grand Bain, Grenadine, Récif, Cosmopolitan, Manhattan, Tsar, Pam, Pilar
-
Sewing thread : white, flamenco red or ink
-
Buttons : Aegis, Jewel, Talisman, white/red/ink ranges
-
Matching lining : Midnight Blue, White Silver
HORIZON navy poly viscose voile
-
Is it transparent?: Absolutely not. The term "voile," as used by our weaver, refers to a fine plain weave made with tightly woven, high-twist threads. Despite the name, this fabric is not transparent at all. It’s lightweight, soft, and fluid, yet still has a certain structure and body to it.
-
Fabric Type : The weaving is done on a loom, it is not printed. It is a plain weave with weft threads dyed before weaving and the warp threads are white.
-
What patterns to sew this fabric : dresses, blouses, shirts, skirts, loose trousers, light shorts.
-
Pattern Matching:
The design has a 1.5 cm repeat and requires no adjustments to the recommended fabric lengths.
-
Can I change the direction of the stripes?
The stripes on our Horizon fabrics are horizontal. If you'd like to use them vertically, you’ll need to rework your cutting layout and recalculate your fabric requirements, especially for patterns that require more than 1.5m of fabric at 140cm width. Please note that we’re unable to provide exact yardage for this adjustment, as it will depend on your chosen pattern, size, and any modifications. The fabric is 150cm wide, so you'll need to imagine laying your pattern pieces within a 150cm-high rectangle and measure the total width they require.
-
Width : 150 cm
-
Thread : Ink
-
Buttons : Jewel, Ink or Tango Red
-
Fabric direction : yes (alternating navy, red, white stripes which follow a precise order)
Off-white ecru jeans
-
Stretch? : No this fabric is 100% cotton, 320g/m2
-
Is it opaque enough : Its weight and weave give this fabric good opacity. We chose it precisely because the twill weave was tight enough to avoid underwear being seen through, provided you opt for plain underwear/without too much contrast.
-
Suggested patterns : Ronsard, Hussard, Récif, Grand Bain, Pilar, Dandelion, Calypso, Metropolis, blazer, Grenadine skirt.
-
Washing instructions : turn the jeans inside out before washing, this limits friction on the outer surface.
-
Wash at 30°C maximum , gentle cycle.
-
Avoid a full drum : wash alone or with other white clothes only.
-
Use a special white detergent (or add a spoonful of bicarbonate soda to the drum).
-
Avoid fabric softener : it can yellow the fabric over time.
