Choosing the right fabric for your bow project
In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a chic, on-trend bow to attach to a clip barrette. We’ve designed this DIY tutorial using three beautiful Maison Fauve fabrics that each highlight the bow’s elegant shape in their own way:
-
Poésie Bois de Rose jacquard – soft yet structured, perfect for a romantic and refined look.
-
Lunares Encre polka dot fabric – bold and playful, it brings an irresistible retro charm.
-
Rouge Tango tencel satin – fluid and luminous, for a look that’s both chic and daring.
Each fabric brings its own unique character to your accessory. For a bow with a beautiful drape, we recommend using soft, fluid materials such as cotton, viscose, silk, a lightweight and supple suiting wool, or a soft denim like our Macadam denim.
Everything You Need to Sew Your Bow Barrette
To create your beautiful accessory, you’ll need:
- A piece of fabric measuring 80 x 20 cm
- A piece of Vlieseline G710 fusible interfacing, 40 x 20 cm
- A clip barrette (like the one we have used)
- Matching sewing thread
- A hand-sewing needle for the finishing touches
THE PATTERN FOR THE BOW
The pattern has 2 pieces:
- the main strip to be cut x 2 on the fold
- the central strip to cut x 1
Next, cut two rectangles of G710 fusible interfacing, each measuring 32 x 7 cm.
Fuse each one to the wrong side of the fabric strips, centering the interfacing carefully.
Your pieces are now ready to sew!
Seam allowances are included and measure 1 cm.
Steps for Sewing the Bow Barrette
- Pin the two main fabric strips right sides together, aligning the edges. Leave a 6 cm opening to turn the piece right side out later.
- Sew with a 1 cm seam allowance, then clip the corners to reduce bulk. Turn the strip right side out.
- Press thoroughly, paying special attention to shaping the corners neatly.
- Fold in the seam allowance at the opening, press to flatten, and close the gap with a hand stitch for a clean finish.
- Fold the strip in half, right sides out, and sew a vertical seam 16 cm from the fold -this will start to shape your bow.
- Gently spread the loop to centre the seam you just made. Then, sew a second vertical seam directly over the first to secure the position of the knot.
- Next, pinch the centre of the bow to create a pleated effect, shaping it with your fingers to mimic the look of a tied knot.
- Wrap a piece of thread tightly around the centre and tie it securely to hold the shape in place.
-
The central strip:
Start by pressing a 1 cm fold at the top and bottom of the strip, wrong sides together. Then, fold the strip lengthwise, right sides together, and pin along the edge, unfolding the pre-pressed folds as you go. Sew with a 1 cm seam allowance, then turn the strip right side out and press thoroughly. Finally, refold the 1 cm ends inward, tucking them neatly into the strip to create clean, finished edges, and press once more to set the shape.
- Lay the centre strip flat in front of you and place the bow on top, with the wrong side facing up. Take the barrette clip, open it, and position it against the back of the bow, so it's lying back to back with the fabric. Wrap the centre strip around the bow and the clip, sliding in the ends and overlapping them snugly. Secure the strip in place with tight hand stitches at the back.
- To finish, use a few hand stitches to attach the small holes at the ends of the barrette clip to the two “tails” of the bow. This will keep everything neatly in place.
Congratulations - your bow barrette is complete!
Whether you're using it to tie your hair back in style, elevate a messy bun, frame a retro-inspired fringe à la Demoiselles de Rochefort, or simply add a touch of Maison Fauve charm to a classic outfit, this elegant hair clip is sure to become a go-to in your accessories collection. It also makes a thoughtful and stylish handmade gift!
